Abstract

This study looks into the production of social remittance within the activities of Indonesian entrepreneurs in Malaysia and Saudi Arabia. It uses an exploratory comparative case study to examine how two culinary entrepreneurs engage with local citizens and traverse legal, market, supplier, and cultural challenges as they seek to build food businesses. Applying an exploratory comparative case study, it examines how two culinary entrepreneurs negotiate the legal, market, supplier and cultural contexts of building food businesses in collaboration with local citizens. In-depth interviews provided data which were analysed thematically using NVivo with node development, word cloud visualization and cross case comparison. The results indicate that social remittances come about in culturally connected business arrangements. They can be found in Malaysia in legal adaptation, local brand positioning, business standardization and entrepreneurial knowledge sharing. They have appeared in Saudi Arabia in hybridisation of culinary styles between Indonesia and Arabia, the mediation of communication, negotiation of trust, and adaption of services.
